Average position when mentioned
Definition
The average order in which the brand appears across the answers that mention it. Position 1 means it was named first.
How it is calculated
Position is relative to the tracked entities, and it is averaged only over answers where the brand is mentioned, so it is not comparable with a mention rate. A surface can lead when the brand appears in it and still be mentioned rarely: a perfect 1.0 alongside a low mention rate means the brand is named first when named, not that it is named often. The count of answers the mean covers is reported as positioned answers, and absence is represented by mention rate rather than a position penalty.
Where to see it
This metric appears in the refd dashboard and in the no-signup demo, and every value links back to the AI answer it was scored from. A number you cannot trace to an answer cannot be checked, so refd keeps the raw response behind each one.
