AI Mode tracking
Google AI Mode tracker with source evidence
Track brand and competitor visibility in Google AI Mode across buyer questions, repeated answers, cited sources, position, and sentiment.
Short answer
refd monitors Google AI Mode as its own conversational Search surface. It repeats each buyer question, records the final answer and source URLs, and measures brand mentions, citations, first-mention position, sentiment, prominence, and share of voice separately from Google AI Overviews.

The answer names Ultrahuman early but cites another tracked brand, showing why mentions and citations must remain separate.
Google AI Mode is the conversational, exploratory AI experience inside Google Search. It should be measured separately from the shorter AI Overview that may appear on a standard results page.
refd records the final answer text, returned source URLs, and the position and context of every tracked brand for a fixed buyer question. It does not claim access to Google’s internal reasoning or retrieval process.
What Google AI Mode visibility means
Google Search Central describes AI Mode as useful for nuanced questions, exploration, reasoning, and complex comparisons. Google says AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing related searches across subtopics and data sources before producing a response with supporting web links.
That makes AI Mode relevant to buyer questions that previously required several searches. A brand can appear because it owns the category, fits one subtopic, is recommended by a supporting source, or is used as a comparison point.
refd captures the final answer and returned URLs. It does not record the fan-out queries themselves, and it cannot tell which internal step caused a brand to appear.
What refd measures on AI Mode
| Signal | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often the final answer names the brand |
| Citation rate | How often a returned supporting URL belongs to the brand |
| Average position | Where the brand is first named relative to tracked competitors |
| Share of voice | The brand’s share of tracked mentions in the selected range |
| Prominence | Whether the strongest brand mention is in the lead, body, or a list |
| Sentiment | How the answer portrays the brand when it is mentioned |
| Source domains | Which brand, competitor, publisher, and community URLs support the answer |
Mention and citation are independent. This is especially important on source-rich answer surfaces, where a publisher can support a recommendation and a brand can be named without receiving a direct link.
Read the illustrative result
The fabricated sample asks for alternatives to Oura Ring. Google AI Mode names Ultrahuman second, but the returned source list cites WHOOP rather than ultrahuman.com.
The result is not simply “visible” or “not visible”:
- Ultrahuman earned a brand mention.
- Another tracked entity appeared first.
- Ultrahuman did not receive direct brand-domain citation credit.
- The answer associated Ultrahuman with a ring form factor, recovery, circadian guidance, and no recurring fee.
That combination can be more useful than a composite score. It identifies a strong product association and a direct-source gap at the same time.
AI Mode is not an AI Overview
Google now lets users move from an AI Overview into an AI Mode conversation in supported experiences, but the two surfaces still serve different moments. Google describes an AI Overview as a quick snapshot and AI Mode as the deeper conversation.
refd therefore tracks the two surfaces separately:
- Google AI Mode is tracked as a conversational Search answer.
- Google AI Overviews are tracked as part of standard Google Search results.
- A successful AI Overview query may return no Overview, which is stored as a valid absence.
- AI Mode results are treated as full answers and scored from the returned answer text and source URLs.
Do not combine the two into one visibility rate. The denominators and product experiences differ.
What to do with the evidence
Start with buyer questions that require comparison or exploration:
- Compare products for a specific use case.
- Recommend options under several constraints.
- Explain tradeoffs between categories.
- Find alternatives to a known product.
- Select an option for a company type, budget, integration, or region.
When a competitor leads, inspect the wording and supporting domains. Determine whether the answer reflects a real product difference, stronger third-party evidence, clearer documentation, or an outdated claim. Monitoring describes the result. It does not guarantee that editing a page will change AI Mode.
Google’s site-owner guidance says the normal foundations of SEO remain relevant for AI Mode and AI Overviews. It does not require special AI markup or a new machine-readable file for inclusion.
Limitations
AI Mode responses and links can vary with prompt wording, location, available sources, product updates, personalization, and collection time. The answer may also reflect related searches that refd does not see.
Two samples expose some variation, but not every possible result. The tracker is a repeated measurement of a defined prompt set, country configuration, and collection time. It is not a complete account of Google’s internal retrieval or every user’s Search experience.
Frequently asked questions
Does refd capture AI Mode’s fan-out queries?
No. refd records the final answer and returned source URLs. It does not claim access to Google’s internal related queries or reasoning.
Why track AI Mode separately from AI Overviews?
They are different Search experiences and can use different models, techniques, answers, and links. AI Overviews also have a meaningful no-answer state that does not apply to the other tracked answer surfaces in the same way.
Is there special markup required to appear in AI Mode?
Google says there are no additional technical requirements beyond being eligible for Google Search with a snippet. Helpful content, crawlability, internal linking, textual availability, and ordinary Search fundamentals still matter. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.
